Quilting and Vintage Quilt Patterns

Quilting is an old craft. Nowadays it's done for pure enjoyment, but in years gone by it was done out of necessity. Homemakers needed to save and use every scrape of material left over from their sewing projects and these carefully cut scraps were then pieced into a patchwork quilt.

These pioneer women who pieced quilts told the story of their travels, their friendships, their homes and families.

Most of the time, quilting was the only creative outlet these women had. Each quilt pattern originated from their own life experiences.

Vintage Quilt Patterns

Old quilt patterns were Log Cabin, Drunkards Trail, Double Wedding Ring, The Madison Block, named after President James Madison, and his wife, Dolly had a quilt pattern named after her, Dolly Madison's Star. There were Tulip and Rose motifs, Pinwheel designs, Diamonds and Stars, and the list is endless of the beautiful and intricate designs of quilts.

Quilt Crafting

Our pioneer sisters took great pride in crafting a beautiful quilt. It not only served her family for warmth in winter but was also a work of art. But these women would have scoffed at the idea of their quilt being art. It was simply something that they did.
